Billy answered
the door still in his pyjamas, I got angry with him, why aren’t you
ready? Over the next half hour Jamie and Mick turned up. About time we
were ready, it was ten o clock, we set off all of excited on our long
journey, we were heading to Calderstone Park, we knew Strawberry Fields
was on the other side of there. John Billy’s brother had given us
directions. We got to New Heys School, we were close. We were all talking
amongst ourselves saying “we’ll have loads of strawberries soon”. We
started to jog for a bit, the anticipation building up inside me.
We were at Calderstones now we were nearly there. We
got to the other side to Menluve Avenue; it was a long busy main road we
had to cross. We knew it was the other side opposite Calderstones, we got
across the road, and we were on a long road with houses on it. We knew we
were on the right road but there were no fields, looking at each other
bewildered we asked some man did he know where Strawberry Fields was. He
turned around and pointed at a big set of gates and said “that’s
it”. I felt my stomach turn and the disappointment was strong (we’d
been blagged). Strawberry Fields was a children’s home, we all
looked at each other devastated, and starting our way home we were all
talking about John saying how he had conned us, making us believe it was
full of strawberries. When we got home our mums were out in the street, so
was John, they were all laughing when they saw the looks on our faces and
our stooped shoulders. We let them know we weren’t happy, but looking
back now I can laugh, and I’ve sat there with my friends over the years
and laugh at how gullible we were.
