NGEI 1 DEVELOPMENT YOUTH GROUP

Organization Profile:

Ngei 1 Development Youth Group was formed in 1997 when youths in conjunction with some community members of Ngei 1 village mooted an idea of forming a development group for the youth of the area.  At the time, youths were engaged in all forms of social vices such as drug abuse, prostitution, rape, mugging etc.  This was due to poverty, illiteracy and lack of information.  The area is improvised and is characterized by a high level of diseases.  Youths are often misused by politicians by being given handouts to disrupt meetings at the time of elections. The group was formally registered as a Community Based Organization (CBO) in 1998 under the Ministry of Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services.  It currently has a membership of 47. The group is based in Ngei 1 Village, Huruma Ward, and Starehe Constituency in Nairobi City.

The group has achieved a great deal in the years of its existence and current activities include the following: Garbage Collection & Waste Recycling, Water and Sanitation (public toilets, bathrooms & water vending), Transportation Services, Arts and Crafts project, Advice and Guidance, Revolving Loan Scheme for members, and a Community Resource Centre.  The group also has a football team called Jah Post FC.

MANAGEMENT
The group is managed by an elected Management Committee of 10 people.  Each activity has its own coordinator and supported by a Project Manager, Project Coordinator and Programme Advisor.  All of these positions are voluntary and the organization practices a collective style of leadership throughout its activities.

FUNDING
The organization’s projects are funded through our various Income Generating Activities (IGAs), members own resources, community members, donors and other well-wishers

OUR VISION
To see a society in which youths are empowered, self reliant and actively involved in community development

OUR MISSION
Ngei 1 Development Youth Group exists to empower the youths to live an honest and self-reliant life through income-generating activities, community mobilization and offering quality services.

SERVICES

Garbage Collection:
This is the lead activity of the group.  It was initiated in 1998 after a thorough and careful evaluation of the community’s needs.  At the time, there were no garbage collection services provided and the area was characterized with piles of garbage, which was both unhealthy and damaging to the environment.  The group developed this as a service, which now takes place in Huruma and Kasarani at very competitive rates.  Garbage is collected from households and businesses, recyclable materials are separated and Nairobi City Council disposes of the remaining waste.  We also hold monthly Community Clean-Up events in order to encourage and maintain a healthy and clean environment in our community.

Water and Sanitation:
Due to inadequate sanitation and water supply for many residents, the group constructed a ‘water point’ in 2000 and now offers public toilets, bathrooms, water vending and cleaning services to members of the Ngei 1 Community.  Cleaning services are also offered to residential and commercial premises.

Transportation:
We have a vehicle and hand-carts that are used for transportation of garbage, whilst providing transportation services to community members and others at reasonable rates.

Arts and Crafts:
Our newest project is one in which members are engaged in making beadwork and papier mache products, which are sold to generate income for the group.

Advice and Guidance:
We offer advice and guidance for any youths who are in need of this through using group therapy.

Revolving Loan Scheme:
This scheme was initiated in 2000 and involves revolving funds amongst members in the form of loans, which are re-payable on a monthly basis with very low rates of interest.  There is also a savings scheme for members for their assistance.

Community Resource Centre:
The group’s office also serves as a resource centre, where community members can exchange information, books, magazines and ideas.  They also learn computer skills and collect correspondences.

Future Plans:

·         Expansion of Garbage Collection Services to other areas

·         Development of Recycling Activities

·         Composting of Organic Waste

·         Developing new Arts & Crafts activities (tie & dye, leatherwork etc)

·         Extension of Revolving Loan Scheme to other community members

·         Development of a Cyber Café for community members

·         Development of a Nursery School
