Summary Report

A significant milestone in the development of Kabubbu Community Library Service was achieved by this visit to Kabubbu.  The Library Service has now moved from its temporary classroom location to a dedicated Library building.   This represents the end of the major

capital investment / infrastructure development phase in the Kabubbu Community Library Service Project.  The work carried out on this visit was important because it was the last chance for the Community in Kabubbu to participate in the construction of the dedicated Library.  The Quicken Trust contracted out construction of the dedicated building.   The involvement of the Kabubbu Community in all aspects of the Library development work, on this visit, was crucial to establishing a sense of local ownership and value for the Library.  The joint work program between BA / EMCOR volunteers and the Kabubbu Community was very successful.  Local involvement included: 15 book classification volunteers, 16 trainee carpenters, 10 local artists / art students and 15 children stenciling motifs. The Librarians expressed their gratitude that so many people from the UK had come to share their different skills with the people of Kabubbu.  The volunteers from British Airways and EMCOR, who ranged in age from 20 to 60, all found their visit exceptionally rewarding despite an intense work program in challenging conditions.

The annual evaluation conducted in May 2004 revealed new levels of empowerment amongst the adult Library users.  They reported that they had learned many basic skills for the first time including counting money, understanding dates and writing their names. Literacy students had overcome the shame they felt at being illiterate, increased their self-esteem and gained hope for the future.
