Kabbubu Community Library
There are 7 Employment Skill
Development Clubs, affiliated to Kabubbu Community Library Service,
studying subjects which include: tailoring, carpentry and
agriculture. The Clubs have proved their determination to
learn by meeting regularly and recruiting voluntary teachers. After
6 months hard work their skills have built up to a level where they
can consider starting small businesses.
The
Clubs difficulty was that they had no business experience or
planning skills. These skills are rare in Uganda and cost a
lot to obtain. Joelle solved the problem by offering to use
her teaching skills to share her business knowledge in Uganda.
Joelle led a 5 day workshop in Kabubbu Community Library on
Basic Business and Accountancy Skills. The classes proved so
popular that more people turned up every day until the room was full
to overflowing. After each 3 hour session the delegates would
stay behind to receive individual attention and work on their
business plans.
The
value of Joelle's work was summed up by this comment: "I have
been a carpenter for 20 years but I never understood how to make my
business work before this course".
By
the end of the week each club had completed a quality 12 Month
Business Development Plan and understood the terms Development,
Market, Price, Account, Profit, and Risk. On her return to the
US Joelle continued working
finalising the 12 Month Plans and also her feedback suggestions for
improvements to the clubs.
