Girls to Mothers Initiative BACKGROUND G2MI is a rural based, youth focused private, not for profit and non governmental organization, committed to the empowerment of young women and girls involved in commercial sex as a way of living, in communities in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. It aims to improve the lives of young girls and women through the provision of comprehensive sexual reproductive health, family education, and marketable vocational and income generating skills. OUR VISION The vision of the Girls to Mother Initiative is to reinvent the honored notion of dignity in labour, and to lay a foundation for the emergence of responsible parenthood for future mothers. OUR MISSION G2MI is dedicated to the total empowerment of the girl-child, instilling dignity, honor, discipline, virtue, self esteem, accountability and responsibility in young women especially those who are single parents. OUR OBJECTIVES · Create a fast-track process for young women’s self-realizations of their overall development as a strategy for coping with the economic, social and psychological damages caused by early pregnancy and dropping out of school. · Develop the employability of out of school girls through vocational training in computers, sewing, catering, and other small and medium-scale enterprises. · Change the traditional thinking of girls and young women on their dependence on men for income. · Educate and enlighten young women on the consequences of promiscuity, early pregnancy, and abstinence and thereby increase their self-esteem. · Promote the use of condoms and voluntary confidential counseling and Testing (VCCT.) · Enable young women to make informed decisions about themselves by providing information through community-based counseling services, and through the use of mobile phones. · Prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections through the use of IEC materials: stickers, banners, billboards and rallies in the community. · Help young women to be better prepared for parenthood. · Provide appropriate schooling opportunities for young women who want to return to complete primary/secondary school in adulthood. STRATEGIES To achieve its goal and objectives, Girls to Mother Initiative implements various programs and strategies, which include: REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND FAMILY HEALTH EDUCATION Girls to Mother Initiative provides reproductive and family health training to young women through sexuality education, peer education, and clinical and counseling services with qualified health officers on healthy and responsible decisions about their health and sexuality. JOB AND VOCATIONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT This program is aimed at developing women’s and girls’ skills and talents through vocational training which includes food processing, hair dressing, computer training and entrepreneurial skills development for out-of-school girls. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT G2MI facilitates the integration of young women into the community through the active involvement and participation of community gate keepers and leaders, parents, and local policy makers. MICRO CREDIT G2MI promotes and provides technical support, skills, networks and mentoring to young women who want to start businesses through micro credit facilities as a spring board toward self-reliance. MDG ACTIVITIES In October 2006, G2Mi was nominated as one of the Nigerian Delegates to the Regional West African Workshop on Youths in Civics Engagement in Relation to Millennium Development Goals (MDG), a World Bank/Global Youth Action Network (GYAN). She is a graduate of English from the Rivers State College of Education and is presently the Secretary of the organisation. Josephine Idante Josephine Idante is 26 years old and has four years experience on developmental work on youths and human rights through out her stay in school. She is a graduate of Banking and Finance in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology. She is a member of the organisation. Linda Abaa Linda a is 27 years old and has three years experience in developmental work and Adolescent Reproductive Health (HIV/AIDS). Presently she is a third year (Microbiology) student of university of Port Harcourt. She is the project officer of the organisation.
