Present Status Over for the past 15 years, Gayaaza parish, like other parts of Uganda, has registered a growing population of children infected and /or affected by the HIV/AIDS scourge. At present Gayaaza Parish community has approximately 7,000 orphans (53% girls and 47 boys) disregarding religious or tribal identities (CASSO Baseline study on foster-homes and Orphans, 2003).Regarding basic care, the orphans are supported by care-givers who are either their surviving single parents ( widows or widowers) or foster-parents ( guardians). The number of widows is about four times that of widowers. The age structure of widows range from 18 to 60 years. The Guardians are over 500. 38% are between 20 to 45 years. 31% are 45 to 60 years and 31% are 60 to 100 years. This number provide support to two categories of orphans: those abandoned by their single surviving parents ( widows or widowers) and those who have lost both parents. 30% of orphans are double-orphans.
