Friendships from The Emerald Island to Himalaya.
Largymore Primary School, Lisburn : Metta Center, Kathmandu, Nepal

Largymore Primary is continually searching out new friends and encouraging the international ethos adopted by  many, “Global Education for All” Just recently, Largymore has developed a very blossoming relationship with a school/home on the foothills of Mount Everest in Nepal. From a very old computer, shortly to be replaced by the children of Largymore , the children are in daily communication both by e-mail and the slower more conventional postal services. In a recent letter between  two children Binita in Nepal and Lloyd, Binita stated  how she felt that they were so fortunate in being allowed the chance to study at school……… so poignant from one so young living in the poorest of conditions in one of the world’s most impoverished countries. Binita, aged 13,  is a very shy but extremely bright child. The family is very poor by even the impoverished standards of the area. Maybe we never do properly appreciate the opportunities dedicated parents and teachers afford their children.

“ It is both a wonderful pleasure and an education for our school to have such close links with the children of the Metta Center. These children in Kathmandu have little but appreciate so much and their links with Largymore provide us with a great enrichment ” said Mr. Stewart, principal of Largymore.

The Metta Centre has at present 12  children who are resident and the school attached has 75 children. These come from the small town of Benepa on the outskirts of Kathmandu. The town  has a population of 6000 children.  The centre conducts weekend activities and educational programmes for 50 non residential children who are very under privileged and are carefully selected to receive the free education that is available. Due to financial constraints only a very small percentage can avail themselves of the education programmes offered. The dedicated staff do however work to their maximum capacity. There are no organisations supporting this school and their well intentioned programmes. materials and resources are at a bare minimum.
