Arabuko
Sokoke Forest, Gede, Kenya.
Fully Funded by the UTU
On Tuesday
26 November, 2002, Janet and Catherine will run a Teachers'
Workshop in Arabuko Sokoke Forest, Gede, Kenya. Co-ordinated by Mr
Tsofa Mweni, - Education
Officer for A Rocha, Kenya, twenty five teachers and environmental
educators from the surrounding area will take part in an
interactive workshop looking at techniques and resources for
delivering environmental awareness. This year's
workshop will be a continuation of a foundation course run
in November 2001when participants looked at the education work
enthusiastically took part in hands on activities and educational
games. The teachers then adapted the resources to suit their
local environment and conditions. Feedback from the
workshop was extremely positive with several of the teachers using
the resources and techniques in the classroom and many requesting
further training, which we are now delighted to be able to
provide. This year's course will focus on techniques and
educational resources that will foster young people's
understanding of forest conservation and its importance to their
sustainability, as well as that of the wildlife dependant upon it.

School
for Diagnostics and Development, Mozyr, Belarus
The
new school has a very long title but in its shortened form is the
“School for Diagnostics and Development”. The director,
Ludmila, was previously in charge of a most impressive orphanage.
The director will do everything in her power to make life both
constructive and enjoyable for the children whilst being realistic
on how best others can help. The school is due to open for the
children in September, following
the holidays, but still there will be much to do with little or no
finances to complete many of the tasks. The fabric of the school
had once been used as another
educational establishment with different aims and the new director
wishes to redesign many of the rooms into smaller diagnostic
units. The UTU have been able to assist with a substantial amount
of wallpaper, wallpaper paste and educational toys. Just a
very small amount of what will be needed to fulfill the dreams of
the director to provide an educational environment that has
surroundings akin to achieving the full potential from the
children. In the years to come we will undoubtedly be able to
assist further but one step at a time.
