The Library is based in the
newly opened Kabubbu Community Primary School, which is at the heart of the
village, where the people come to collect water. The Library is open
to everyone in the community and is developing it's programme to offer
something for everyone. The aim is to create a Library Service that
provides a range of participatory events which are both educational and
fun. The views of the community are discovered through large community
meetings, the Library Suggestions Box and referred by members of the Library Committee; who represent a
cross-section of groups within the community. In this way the
community is able to guide the Library Programme Development so that it
meets their priorities and becomes an effective service to empower their
lives. So far, a huge number of the community have become involved with the Library Service and it has
united them together. Vickie hopes this will increase as
the Library programme becomes established and outreach is a possibility.
The Librarians are from the local area and already have a relationship
with the people. Involvement of local staff and committee members is
crucial for the development of the skills necessary to manage the Library
within the community. The Community must feel that they
have ownership and self-determination over the Library Service which aims
to serve them. |
