The local Pastor said the
community were "boiling with joy" at the opportunities available
to them and that he often saw them running so as not to be late for their
classes. Everyone who contacts me tells me what an excellent job the
librarians are doing and how happy the community are.
The literacy classes have had full progress tests organised by the
librarians and the Quicken Trust noted an improvement in the levels of
English amongst the community on their last visit.
The head teacher of the local primary school has written to me to say how
the resources in the library have helped him and the students. Students from
local schools are delighted to have somewhere to study at weekends and have commented ' all the books I
need for secondary school are here'.
Charles Sendegeya, youth Attaché with
UNESCO Uganda, congratulated the librarians, Library Committee and
community volunteers on their contribution to the success of Kabbubu
Community Library. He presented certificates and a trophy in recognition
of their efforts at the Kabbubu Community Library Literacy Competition,
17th September, 2003.
Praise for Kabbubu Community Library was
also given by The Primary Education Minister from the Ugandan Ministry of
Education, Professor Isaac Kigongo-Bukenya from the East African School of
Library Science, a representative of Macmillan Publishers and local
politicians ; on the occasion of the Literacy Competition.
The Librarians have
been
building the confidence of the literacy students to take part in a
Literacy Competition which they have organised. The
most outstanding change in the people is their change in outlook as a
result of these developments. The
fact that people from the UK have taken an interest in helping them
means they no longer feel like the 'forgotten people'. They are
positive and hopeful for the future and want to participate fully in
growing their ability to develop sustainability and gain
self-determination.

" I hope that the library will empower them to
do this successfully. The Library Committee and Librarians
are great at keeping in touch and regularly send photos of the Library
Service in action. The Librarians are excellently
organised and have successfully managed the start up of the literacy
classes under the guidance of the Library
Committee. I have not been involved in this it is all their own
achievement. I feel that these achievements are
outstanding for a library which has only been open 6 months in an under
developed rural area."
Let me extend every best wish to Kabbubu Community
Library for the future of this project.
